Plates to Pixels was formed in 2007 to promote the creation of photography-based fine art and was established by artists, for artists. The name “Plates to Pixels” suggests the evolution of photography from the archaic wet-plate process to the new digital format of pixels and includes everything in between.
Our mission is to provide exhibition opportunities for emerging and established artists working in the photography arts. This includes, but is not limited to, the alternative photographic processes (Daguerreotype, cyanotype, platinum palladium, ferrotypes, pinhole photography, etc.), as well as traditional print processes (gelatin silver, chromogenic prints, Polaroids, etc.), and all digital photographic processes and other mixed media photo-based art. Plates to Pixels provides educational resources to the public – spanning from the birth of photography to contemporary photography trends through artist interviews, online resources, web-based exhibitions and site specific exhibitions.
Blue Mitchell, Curator
Blue Mitchell is an independent publisher, curator, teacher and photographer. Based in Portland, Oregon, he has been involved with many faucets of the photographic arts. Mitchell received his BFA from Oregon College of Arts & Crafts, where he studied photography. Since then, he has curated and juried several photography exhibitions, created an online photography gallery, and launched a new fine art photography magazine called Diffusion. Most recently Mitchell was invited to jury the 2010 Photolucida Critical Mass as well as serve as a reviewer at the 2010 PhotoNola in New Orleans.
Mitchell’s online curatorial project, Plates to Pixels, bridges the gap between antiquated photographic processes and new digital media. Every two months the gallery showcases and interviews two artists – side by side – working in these seemingly polarized mediums. Plates to Pixels also hosts a annual guest juried exhibit and other themed invitational group exhibitions.
J Swofford, Guest Contributor
From his earliest days J has been a little different from other people. His parents, compromising on an argument, gave him as his full first name the letter “J”. It has been a mixed blessing; wonderful in its uniqueness, cumbersome in its nonconvention.
Although at times in his formative years he tried to deny it, J has always been in love with art. Being the son of art loving parents, art chose him long before he was born.
J picked up his first camera in the summer of 1996 and from there taught himself black and white developing and printing. www.abnormalimage.com
