Can you explain what symbols you use and why?
The symbols I work with are hard to pin down because they are constantly shifting and changing, but on the deepest level they are all fundamentally about longing. The longing of nostalgia; the longing for home.
What is your biggest inspiration when making your art?
My biggest inspiration is music, especially the music of my friend Jeff Zentner. If I can listen to a piece of music and close my eyes and see the song…that’s one of the best things in the world.
Define Beauty.
Everything is beautiful if you look at it right.
What are you favorite tools for art-making?
Film. Simple as that. I love the way it smells, I love the sound it makes as it advances through a camera, I love the feeling of looking at my negatives for the first time. I also love my Pentax K 1000 very much. It was my first love, camera-wise.
Who is your favorite photographer or artist and why?
My favorite photographer is Robert Frank. When I was 17 I saw a retrospective of his work at the National Gallery in D.C. All of the sudden I knew what I wanted to do with my life.
